The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT expects the next four months to be busy ones when it comes to developing technical standards for Stage 2 of meaningful use.
Government Health IT reports that during this time period, the agency plans to fine tune certification standards and update descriptions of technical requirements for the electronic health records incentive program.
Doug Fridsma, director of standards and interoperability at ONC, said that the goal is to give providers as clear a picture as possible in order to make the second stage of meaningful use as simple and straightforward for them.
"We need to start now to have a good interplay between the goals of the policy committee in what they recommend and the way in which that can be supported through standards, implementation specifications and certification criteria," he told the news source.
Getting the standards right now could save providers and government officials trouble when they go into effect, which is expected to be sometime in 2013.
